Treasure in Heaven
Passage: Matthew 6:19-24 Preacher: Mark Kingston
QUICK RECAP
In this passage, Jesus is talking about treasure. But we quickly discovered that it's not really about the stuff we own. It's about what we trust. What makes us feel peaceful. What we lean on when life gets tough.
Think about it. What's your go-to for security? Your job? Your savings? A particular person? We all have something or someone, right? But Jesus, in his brilliantly subversive way, flips the script. He says, "Hey, what if your security came from something - or Someone - that can't be shaken?"
So here's the big idea: God is enough.
He is really, truly enough for every situation. Enough for your past. Enough for your future. Enough for your right now. Imagine living from that place. Imagine being so convinced in your heart of God's goodness that you can sleep through life's storms, trusting him with the outcome. Imagine being so at peace in his care that bad news doesn't send you spiralling because you know Who's got you. That’s what’s at stake here.
It's not about having less. It's about trusting more. It's about being freed up from the kind of fear that pushes us to accumulate more “stuff” so that we’re fully available to join God in His wild, beautiful work of redeeming everything everywhere.
And get this - it's not just a you thing. It's an us thing! We should take a moment to ask: what is our security based on? As a church, what if our security wasn't in our style, our space, or our situation but in the God who turns water into wine and death into life? What if that freed us up to dream God-sized dreams for Gibsons and beyond?
Friends, this is the treasure revolution Jesus is inviting us into. So, what if we really lived like God was enough? What might happen in our hearts, in our church, in our town? The invitation's there. Let's take a risk and trust God together!
5 QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU DIG DEEPER
These questions are designed to help you dive a little deeper into this topic. They're not just for your head, but for your heart too, so take your time with them. Maybe grab a coffee, find a quiet spot, and really let them sink in.
When was the last time you felt truly at peace, like you were able to "nap through the storm"? What made that possible? How might that feeling be connected to where your treasure really is?
If you woke up tomorrow completely convinced that God would take care of you, no matter what, how would your day look different? What would you do that you're hesitant to do now?
Think about our church family. Where do you see us putting our security in "earthly treasures"? What might it look like if we collectively shifted our trust to God's provision?
Jesus talks about the "eye" being the lamp of the body. What's one area of your life where you need God to "reveal who He is" so you can see things more clearly?
Imagine Gibsons transformed by a community living like "God is enough." What's one wild, seemingly impossible dream you have for our town that only God could make happen? How might you take a small step towards that this week?
Remember, these aren't just rhetorical questions. They're invitations to see your life, our church, and our community through Jesus' eyes. So, what do you see?
